Becoming a New Mom – 5 Weeks to Transformation

Are you ready to make this year the best one yet for yourself and your whole family?

As moms of children with ADHD or autism spectrum disorders, it’s easy to let ourselves go. We give so much to our kids, and rightfully so, that often there isn’t much less for us.

But, what is it costing you? What is it costing your kids? When you are always giving more energy than you have, it wears you down bit by bit until there isn’t much left to devote to your kids anymore. It strains you, your marriage, your parent-child relationship, your friendships and more.

It’s time to say no to feeling worn out, dragged down, and exhausted all the time.

It’s time to say yes to yourself and to feeling renewed, energetic, and whole again. After all, saying yes to yourself IS saying yes to your children.

I’ve created a special new group support program for the month of February to turn it all around for you. Join me for “Nourishing the Special Needs Mom – The 5 Week Transformation for Body, Mind & Spirit.”

Meeting by group phone calls, we’ll be taking very easy steps together to increase your energy, get healthy, rediscover peace and patience, and quite frankly, feel better than ever! Each week there will be a new topic for the call and we’ll cover everything to truly transform your mind, body and spirit.

Read the complete details here and join in on the fun.

Here’s one thing I’d like to share… Even now, I still find myself struggling to really take care of myself and not let life get in the way. It’s easy to let something slip when you have so many things pulling for your time and attention, and I’m no different.

Honestly, I created this program not just for you, but also for me! I will be participating in this very program right along side of you, taking daily action and keeping myself accountable to saying yes to me. I do hope you join me! We all need support and girl time! :)

Free Teleclass: 3 Essentials to ADHD & Autism Diet Success

Please join me in my free teleclass on Saturday, July 23, 2011:

3 Essentials for Your ADHD and Autism Diet Success:

Building the Foundation of Support

I have narrowed down the most important things you must have in place to have real, long-term success when improving your child’s ADHD or autism spectrum disorder symptoms through diet and nutrition.

My support plan that I take my clients through includes 9 steps, a truly holistic perspective and all-encompassing process to ensure nothing has been left uncared for.

For this call, I’m not going to discuss the full 9 step system, but the 3 essentials, or basic needs that are truly a necessity to get “the diet” right – and do it without struggle and stress!

Once you have these 3 simple things in place, you will have truly built a foundation of support to get going with healthy improvements to your family’s diet and to maintain them for the long term.

We’ll also discuss 3 different types of support and how you need each one to keep going even if it gets rough, and to celebrate your triumphs as you see the positive improvements in your child’s behavior.

This call is packed full with tips and resources, complete with a handout including helpful and important links you don’t want to miss!

Plus, there will be a live Q&A session at the end of my presentation, so you’ll definitely want to be on the call to get your questions answered directly!

You must register to have access to this call. Please follow this link to sign up – and it’s free!

Not sure what a teleclass is?

A teleclass is simply a live, group (or conference) phone call that allows me to hold an audio presentation and speak to the participants. When you register, you will receive the phone number to dial and complete instructions. It’s very easy to attend. All you need is a phone (or skype)!

I’m providing this at no cost to you, so please register now and I’ll “see you” live on the call!

P.S. – Have a friend who would be interested in this information? Share the love, share the link! :)

Summer Fun: No Routine + Aspergers = Frustration!

I have had a pretty bad habit in the past. (Yah, so I’ve had many bad habits in the past…let’s just talk about this one! Ha!) As soon as I learned of the connection between diet and ADHD and autism, I always assumed that any increase or full-out return of eliminated symptoms in my son have to be related to diet.

While that made me diligent in staying on top of the new diet and I learned quick what foods have a negative effect on my son’s aspergers symptoms, it hasn’t always made sense…

This picture says it all...

For example, these last two weeks, my son has been consistently showing some extreme behaviors I haven’t seen in a long time. There has been no explained reason.

There were no slips in his diet. (Thankfully, he lets me know if he thinks he’s had something he shouldn’t. I’ll share my story of his sneaking foods adventure that happened about a year ago sometime later.) I did my duty and checked all labels on his usual foods to be sure there were no ingredient changes, but most of what we eat is fresh and whole and doesn’t even need a label!

What I realized is one thing did change in these last two weeks – and it had nothing to do with food! We have been on summer vacation for a week now and the last week of school before that was crazy with a different outing or schedule every day. Going from a very specific routine, knowing what is coming each day to hectic schedules with all four of my kids was enough to put ME on edge.

Looking back, I’m actually quite proud of how well he did handle it all. It didn’t make the raised level of tension and frustration he was feeling while he was going through it any easier on the rest of us, but hindsight is always a great perspective!

I started our summer point system again a couple of days ago and it has made a tremendous difference. We are finally into a new routine of no schedule to keep to, but with a list of things he can do to earn points to cash in. It is very motivating for him to actually do something productive instead of going bug-eyed on his DS and griping at his sisters all day. With chores and educational activities to choose from, not only is my house a little cleaner, but he’s willingly participating!

It has helped ease the tension around here, too. Part of the deal is that since they get points for doing things they usually do anyway, they also lose points for doing things they shouldn’t, like fighting and complaining or whining.

Thanks to my son’s focus on Pirates of the Caribbean since he saw part 4 at the theater on his birthday, he is bound and determined to earn enough points for a toy he’s dying to get. Since buying things isn’t the point of my reward chart, it doesn’t come cheap! He has been a little more aware of how he talks to others because he doesn’t want to lose any points!

So, yeah, coming back to my original point, it was the break in routine his last week of school and then total lack of one this last week that set things on overdrive here in our home. It doesn’t mean the diet isn’t working. It still is – he’s not having meltdowns and angry rages about these things. I’ve just noticed his patience has been greatly lacking and he needs more help than usual in groups again. These things I can deal with. We all need a little help now and then, don’t we?

What has helped your kids adjust to the new summer routine? Do you use a reward system? How’s it working for you? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

“The Eating Game” – Product Review

***I am amending/adding to this review in response to questions asked after I highlighted this product as our Community Prize Giveaway for August. Any changes in the original post are marked in this style below!***

I got to know Jean Nicol, the creator of “The Eating Game” online through twitter. Out of that relationship came the opportunity for me to review her very unique product for you.

As I received my package with “The Eating Game” in the mail, I felt like a kid at Christmas, waiting to tear into it and put it to use with my kids. I really didn’t know what to expect and was surprised at how compact and simple it was to use. The whole package was no bigger than the size of a 2-inch ring binder.

The contents are:

  • One 3-ring binder with all other contents:
  • Canadian Food Guide (very similar to the U.S. food guide with the same general recommendations)
  • Introductory information about how the game was developed, about Jean Nicol, the game creator, and a page of suggestions for how to use the game (all on quality cardstock paper that will last)
  • 5 Laminated Daily Planning Charts (1 each for ages 2-3, 4-8, 9-13, females 14-18, and males 14-18)
  • 4 Laminated Pages with re-usable Food Picture “Buttons” (1 each for fruits and veggies; water, milk and alternates; grains; meat and alternates)

I also got one copy of the “Eater’s Choice Daily Meal Planner” (which my older son tried out)

  • One laminated chart for 9-13 year-old children with a dry-erase pen and eraser (this is to allow older children with verbal/writing/reading skills to write their own chart in words and not use the picture buttons) [Also available in other age ranges.]

***I originally wrote how I tried using this product for all my kids individually, but as I got to use the product more, I realized that it was really meant for us to use all together or for just 1 child. So, I deleted the original text that doesn’t serve you to know how I stretched it. What you need to know is that I figured out how to use it for the whole family together:

We got busy right away putting this to use for our family’s meals. The kids loved having a say in what we were making. I loved that they were able to tell me what they wanted, without complaining when I said no. There was no more “no” answer to give because with this game, they only got to choose from what I pre-selected! ***

The whole point of this “game” is to encourage your children to eat a healthy variety of foods. It’s not actually a game to play like you would play UNO or Candy Land, but a way to plan your child’s meals so that he/she is involved by having a say of what they want within the options you set out for them. I love the idea. I will definitely recommend this product to my clients who struggle with a picky eater due to Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), Autism or Aspergers, ADHD or general self-limiting food choices.

Although there are several food items I would like to see not included at all on the food buttons, I realize that many kids are starting from ground zero. I don’t expect my clients to jump overnight from fast- and processed frozen food to super-healthy super-heroes and this game is the perfect solution to get your kids to make the first steps to begin making better choices. **And once your kids don’t eat those items anymore, simply remove them from the options you give!**

Here’s how it works:

  • You, as the parent or caretaker, decide from which buttons from each group the child may choose. So, I removed quite a few buttons that we don’t (or can’t) eat because my kids have already long been transitioned out of those food items. **You would also remove anything you don’t have on hand at home to eat or that you don’t want to leave as an option for that particular day.**
  • Your child chooses from the buttons you give as options for what they will be eating. Since I have a family of 6, my kids don’t get full autonomy over what they eat. So, I put in a few items myself for the meals I had planned, and they got to help me choose others. My kids always choose from fruits and veggies for snacks and they got to put in those choices themselves. This game is quite flexible and allows for you to make it work for your unique needs and circumstances.
  • In the end, you can all enjoy a meal together without fighting, complaining, or refusing to eat anything! Since your child feels like they got what they wanted, they are much more compliant and willing to eat the food you give them!

Here are some things I love about the game:

  • Water is included with serving suggestions: Now that my son is in Junior High and has access to vending machines (ggrrrr!!) and sees other kids drink soft drinks all the time, he feels like he has to have juice or Fanta regularly even though we’ve always been regular water drinkers. It has gotten to the point that he would rather not drink anything if I said no to his request. (I can be thankful that he still sticks to his diet “rules” and doesn’t sneak food and drinks that trigger his negative behaviors and meltdowns!) The “Eating Game” helped my son realize that he truly wasn’t drinking enough water. He actually stopped arguing with me about it and drank a glass of water and marked the chart all by himself! For that, I am truly thankful!!!
  • The “Eating Game” is flexible for a variety of diets: This was a key factor for my recommendation and approval. Since I work with a variety of children with different types of restricted diets (Feingold program, GFCF, specific food allergies, vegan/vegetarian, and raw food…), I had to know whether or not this game was flexible for all. Because the parent sets out the options for the child, you can simply remove any items that you can’t eat. Those items marked milk, chocolate or strawberry shake, pudding, ice cream, bread, noodles, crackers, pretzel, etc…are general enough to be applied to their gluten- or dairy-free or even raw vegan forms.
  • Kids have fun and get excited when they feel like they have control over their food choices! Even my kids, who eat a ton of fresh fruits and veggies every day, have their own limitations and preferences. Just because we used “The Eating Game,” suddenly they were trying choices that were previously refused when offered by me! And that’s just because it was a choice for their chart!
  • It’s perfect for transitioning your child to a healthier diet: In the beginning, you can offer a few new foods with some of their old favorites that you are trying to get rid of. As the new items become “the norm,” you can then add a few new choices in while eliminating the old foods you don’t want to include anymore. Slowly but surely your child will be eating better foods and there is no more “You have to eat it because I said so!”

Overall Rating:

So, yes, I love this game. A 10! Two Thumbs Up! I believe it will be very valuable to the many parents who struggle to get their children to eat a healthy variety of foods.

Cost:

This product is a labor of love from its maker. It sells for $79.95 shipping and tax, which is quite high for an eating chart. BUT, it’s NOT just an eating chart. For it’s value in what it does for your special needs child, it is worth every penny. The improvement of your child’s diet is invaluable – especially when it can make such a life-altering difference in our kids with ADHD, autism, and other spectrum disorders!

**My opinion of the price was questioned and it wasn’t clear from my original comment (still included above), so here is what I should have said the first time!:

“If you consider this to JUST be an eating chart, you will think it is overpriced. It is not just an eating chart, but a complete system that simplifies new diet changes and takes the stress out of getting your child to eat healthier. It is more than worth what you pay for and is under-priced for the quality and content it provides.**

If price is a concern for you, there is also a “Make It Yourself” kit that comes with all the content, but you perform the labor of putting it together yourself. That is available at $49.95. You can also purchase the “Eater’s Choice” write-erase pages (without pictures) for individual age groups from ages 4 to adult for only $10. **These, of course, don’t give you the great visual clues that are so great for younger kids or with autism. The full game is best for them.** There is a printable recommended food chart on their website (listed under resources) to use as a guideline for the single charts. [All prices are current at the time of this writing with shipping and tax additional.]

Final Thoughts:

To be fair, I have to say I did not get this game for my own kids who eat very healthy every day and are used to it…I got this game to for the sole purpose of reviewing it to see if it was something I could recommend to my readers!

AND so that I could use it as a giveaway of my soon-to-launch parenting community/forum!! (Provided it was up to my standards in quality, usability, and fitting for unique diets, that is…and I’m happy to say it is!)

If you’d like to have a chance to get these gifts (The Eating Game valued at $79.95, and The Eater’s Choice Daily Meal Planner for Children ages 9-14 valued at $10) keep an eye out for the opening date and simply join the new community and start some conversation. It’s free to join and you could be the lucky winner!

New Site Online and Big Plans Ahead!

If you were already familiar with my site, you’ll have recognized the new site is finally online! I’m very excited about the new look and changes I’ve got coming up.

First, a big thanks to Gina Badalaty, who set-up and designed my site. As a fellow parent of special needs children and a mom who is exploring the use of diet to help her daughters, I was happy to have found her to take on this project. You can find her here at her personal blog and here at her technical site, Art by Tech.

On a personal side, my 8 year-old daughter was hit by a car just days after I announced the new site and forum being developed in this blog post. Life came to a stand-still for me in April and my online projects simply didn’t move forward, aside from my work with clients. Thankfully and miraculously, my daughter is just fine. In the end, aside from some teeth repair that will need to be done, there are no lasting injuries and she is perfectly healthy.

On a happier note, next in the series of events here on the site is to finally get the new parenting community and forum online. Let’s just say there was a much bigger learning curve than I expected in trying to decide on all the technical means to make it all happen! Now that the technical issues are getting worked out, I’m finally ready to concentrate on more writing…which I have greatly missed lately.

I have a lot to be writing about, so this blog and the ezine will be hopping with new information. Be sure you’re subscribed to keep up with the new developments on the forum and get all the help and support you are looking for with your child’s ADHD and autism diet. I’ve got product reviews, nutritional information, and other great tips coming up on the blog. Thanks for sticking with me as I go through this transition!

ADHD and Fish Oil (Omega-3s)

I’m back to writing after my long visit home and want to share a post I wrote today on a forum. It has been asked to me by email before, so I thought I’d add it to the YQA (Your Questions Answered) category and copy my response here for everyone to read:

Question: “Has any one heard anything about Fish oil being used instead of medication? I don’t know for sure if it works but i was thinking about trying it to see if it works.”

My answer:

Using diet/nutritional approaches to ADHD is like a puzzle. On the one hand, our standard diet is deficient in nutrients that we need to function normally. On the other hand, there are a lot of us with food allergies that we aren’t aware of that affect our digestive systems and cause us to have even worse symptoms and further nutritional deficiencies. Add to that all the chemical additives found in foods, and we have the foundation for big problems within our kids (and us!) that we never imagined could be affected – like concentration, sensory and behavior issues.

Omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish oil) are important nutrients that your brain needs to function properly. It isn’t like a medicine that you take to make it work better, it’s an actual important part of our diets. But it is only one part.

Keep supplementing with it (or try it for the first time) but don’t stop with that one piece of the puzzle. Are there other nutrients that need to be boosted in your diets or are there hidden allergies not yet discovered? Eat foods that are naturally high in those nutrients and not full of processed chemical additives.

I’ve seen over and over again that these things do work, but just taking one supplement alone without getting rid of the bad stuff causing the harm isn’t the solution. You are on the right track!
