It means watching my adopted children who were heavily exposed in utero to drugs and alcohol become much more calm, peaceful, and able to learn. The effects were so very similar to autism, aspergers and ADHD (at different times) that I tried it after reading a post by Dr Dianne Black who adopted three children wth Fetal Alcohol Sydrome. I was given zero hope for improvement before reading Dr Black's referance to this diet, but I have found hope and improvement since beginning it! If this is long term so be it. I'm teaching the children to cook with me, and they know this diet works because if we accidently get something that has an affending ingredient in it, they go off the deep end. We are also soy free and artificial color/flavor free and msg, nitrite and nitrate free. To top it off my youngest is on the Feingold diet now and is doing much, much better. We also increased the intake of salmon and turkey as these help to naturally produce seratonin in the brain, and this is a huge help in our youngest son.
This diet is our lifeline. It was so horrible before the kids were on it, I just wish I'd put them on it in the beginning because so many adopted children have been exposed to drugs and alcohol and have a lot of the same issues. If I'd put them on it right away it would have saved us years of frustration. Its not just the autism and ADHD diet to me, it is the miracle diet. I can't reccomend it highly enough.

They are vague terms that probably mean didfferent things to different people. People would need more specific information to know what someone was referring to, but both would be alternatives to medications that would bring on better health for those following them. The ADHD diet, to me, would be the Feingold Program. The autism diet would be the gfcf diet.

My son is 9 years old and we really try to monitor his diet and watch what he eats. He is a carb junky and craves them so much we have had to pull food out of his hands and put limitations on what he may eat at school! We really try to eat healthy- fruits, veggies, salads and chicken. We try to avoid most colors and artificial flavors but allow them as treats once in a while when there is a birthday or special occasion. In all reality, we know that his moods and temperament are directly affected by what he eats but we are full time working parents and it is HARD!! Slowly as he gets older he is starting to realize it himself and can actually "feel different" if he eats a lot of crap food (as we call it!). When he drinks milk he has terrible, room clearing gas so he has stopped eating cheese and drinking milk all on his own. We buy soy and almond for him and just within the last 6 months he has stopped all the "cheating" with dairy on his own because some kids on the bus and at school started teasing him when he would pass gas -yes, it is that bad. We have known all his life that he has ADHD and is on the spectrum but this is the first year we are having actual problems in school and now we are looking into meds. It is all overwhelming and confusing...but I KNOW the better we are with eating natural foods the better off he (and the rest of the family) will be.
I just found this blog and can't wait to join...thank you!!

Diets for Autism/Adhd... my son is recovered from Asperger Syndrome, and diets were a BIG part of his healing.

We started with the Feingold Diet, when he was 2 1/2, and seemed allergic to everything, chemicals, perfumes, very sensitive to all that, and food coloring and preservatives would send him into an hour long tantrum. The diet helped so much but was just the beginning.

We did gluten and casien free later on when he was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. He was more sensitive to milk, but through muscle testing the Wheat wasn't a big enough problem to help him (luckily). We still kept it to a minimum because of the sugar/insulin reaction Wheat causes.

He was on elimination diets, his allergies shifted/ changed every year or so, so we depended on a chiropractor for muscle testing to make sure what his body was handling. Of course we did homeopathic and supplements as well.

Hope this helps! I've been through the gamut on DIETS, and about 5 years ago, he was doing so well, we went off all the diets! He still has to eat 'HEALTHIER' than other people to make sure he doesn't regress, but he literally can eat anything he wants... but he controls it...

[...] “Nourishing the Special Needs Mom – 5 Weeks to Transformation for the Body, Mind & Spirit” is the result of that journey. I’ve created a new support program where we are going to take a step back and focus on YOUR needs, and I will share with you what I did to get through and recover my own mind, body and spirit. It’s all about taking small, do-able steps to build yourself up and create a momentum until you are excited and full of life again! And an energized mom is just what your kids need. I will share with you what and how I changed to support my family, energize myself, and keep on track with interventions for my child.
